The United States National Government has been shutdown for two days now. After the members of Congress failed to reach an agreement on the national budget. Republican Representative Mark Meadows from North Carolina has been blamed for causing the shutdown. Along with his fellow conservative Republicans. They are demanding that Obama’s Affordable Care Act “ObamaCare” be defunded or delayed. Which is causing them to refuse to pass a clean spending plan. President Obama is currently refusing to budge on urging his fellow Democrats to compromise with Meadows and other Tea Party members. For now he is leaving it in the hands of the Congressmen and women to solve there own mess. Many Americans doubt though that their Congressional leaders are willing to compromise with one another. After the shutdown many tax paying government official’s were furloughed or sent home without pay. Without the funds to pay their employees government agencies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) were forces to notify certain employees that they are furloughed. Forcing more Americans to file for unemployment pay which will hardly cover their bills. The tragedy behind this fact is that these hard working men and women. Who do what their job requires them to do have to go home and tell there families that finances will be tight. While their Congressional leaders get to go home like nothing has changed because on friday they will still be getting a paycheck. They will all still be getting paid for everyday that our government is shutdown. Many of them have told reporters that they plan on donating the money they get paid to help less fortunate Americans who are affected by the shutdown. Though I would not expect them to follow through with it. After all they failed to follow through their expectations listed with their job. Congressional leaders are supposed to pass laws and always keep the best interest of the people at heart. A National Government shutdown is not in the best interest of the people. It is not in the best interest of the thousands of Americas going without pay, the cancer patients waiting to sign up for programs to get treated, or the World War II veterans who put their lives on the line to protect our country only to not be able to visit their own memorial. The members of Congress should be ashamed at their inability to reach a compromise.
"Shutdown and No Hope for Compromise"
ReplyDeleteIn this Blog post "Shutdown and No Hope For Compromise" the author is painting the picture that it is only Congresses responsibility to compromise. The author continues on to paint a picture of people suffering only because Congress has failed to do what the Senate and the President insists is the only thing they can do. On the other hand, what about the people who are suffering today because of the Presidents policies? Do they not matter because they don't fit into your political ideology? I ask this because I myself have lost my job because of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). Not only that but back in 2010 when this law was signed into effect it was sold as only costing approximately $900 billion at a time when the National Debt was about $13 trillion. Three years later and the new projected cost of Obamacare is set at $2.5 trillion at a time when our national debt has grown to nearly $17 trillion. You feel sorry now for a few furloughed workers but what will really happen if we stop attracting foreign investors to pay for all of our social programs? Not only that but at the current pace Social Security and Medicare will become insolvent in the next decade, how will that effect the poor and indigent? People need to quit asking what the government can do for you and start asking what you can do for your government!
Reading Lindesy Rininger's blog about the government shut down has only further proved to me that the affordable care act is flawed in many ways. My blog was about the negative aspects of Obamacare and the trouble to come, this blog has me realizing that the trouble has already begun.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first heard the news of the government had shut down I thought it was a joke- it has been years since the government last shut down. I believe shutting down the government has done absolutely nothing. Its a bunch of grown adults refusing to go to work when their is other many things to worry about besides obamacare. Other citizens are losing money because while the government is on strike, they are not getting paid. That being said I do have to say that we should've seen this coming. When obamacare was first brought to the table there were days of arguments and many flaws that were pointed out. Even though Obamacare passed, almost all Republicans voting on this did not favor Obamacare. Once passed, they set a day Obamacare would open up to sign up for insurance and when the day rolls around the government is shut down. I am interested to see what the government is going to do about the problem and how they're going to handle it. Obamacare officially takes act on the first of next year, if the government is shut down just for the sign up of Obamacare, how do you think politicians are going to be the first of January?
